GII operates India’s most advanced research and development (R&D) laboratory dedicated to gemmology and gemstone research. As the only full-fledged SIRO-certified gemmology research laboratory in India, GII conducts cutting-edge research in diamond identification, gemstone origin determination, treatment detection, and advanced gemmological analysis.

GII may be better known in the industry for its work in the field of certification, but its activity as a Research & Development (R&D) centre in gemmology has been no less significant. Our research and development laboratory is a cornerstone of innovation in the gems and jewelry industry.

Today, it is the only full fledged Research Laboratory in field of Gemmology in India, recognised as a SIRO Laboratory by the Department of Scientific & Industrial Research, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. This government recognition confirms that GII’s research methodology and scientific approach meet the highest standards for gemmology research in the country.

Well equipped with the most sophisticated instruments, GII’s R&D Department is on par with many international laboratories, having wide ranging capabilities in different aspects of gemmology. Our research team uses advanced technology including FTIR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, EDXRF, and other state-of-the-art instruments to conduct cutting-edge gemmology research.
