The founding vision began in 1965 when visionary gem traders met in Zaveri Bazaar, Mumbai. Pioneers Shri Kirtilal K. Doshi, Shri Rajendrakumar A. Shah, Late Shri Himmatbhai C. Jhaveri, Shri Padmakant H. Jhaveri, and Shri Pravin M. Nanavati dreamed of establishing a world-class institute. Officially established on April 12, 1971, GII operates as a project of the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) and is registered as a non-profit Public Charitable Trust.

The founding vision for what would become India’s most prestigious gemmology institute began in 1965, when visionary gem traders met in Zaveri Bazaar, Mumbai. These pioneers Shri Kirtilal K.
