Gemmological Institute of India (GII) Mumbai, is a Non-Profit Public Charitable Trust body, founded in 1971 by G&J trade visionaries & registered under the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950. Primary objectives of GII are developing test methods and trained human resources, and implementing test methods for certifying diamonds, colour stones and studded jewelley. Today GII is a pioneer in India in gemmology education and gem & diamond testing and certification. GII is sponsored by BDB, GJEPC, GJEA, DEAL and MDMA. GII is the only gem testing laboratory in India recognized as a SIRO (Scientific Industrial Research Organization) by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India; and its Diamond Grading Laboratory has been accreditated by NABL and is manned by well-trained scientific personnel.
GII plans to expand its activities in India as well as abroad with collaboration with institutes that have similar objectives, mainly serving G&J industry and developing trained human resources, this is essentially for mutual growth. It is truly a proud moment for GII, as one of its distinguished alumni, Mr. Muralidharan founder of Jewellers Institute, Coimbatore has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with GII on January 30th, 2026. This collaboration marks not just an alliance between two leading institutions but also a celebration of shared values and vision in the gem and jewellery sector. GII wishes to start two GII branches in Coimbatore and Chennai with cooperation from JI, as a partner, as a part of this MoA.
Shri Mehul Shah, Chairman, GII, explained his vision of expansion of GII activities. He emphasized that an exponential growth for mutual benefits can be achieved through such collaboration. This sentiment perfectly captures the spirit with which both institutes are approaching this new chapter. Shri Anup Zaveri, Managing Trustee, GII expressed hope that this partnership will flourish in the years ahead, bringing lasting benefits to both organizations.
Mr. Muralidharan quoted that he was overwhelmed with happiness on this significant development. He highlighted how Jewellers Institute conduct third-party quality control for many corporate clients ensuring objectivity by “reporting what is seen with the eyes as a matter of fact, without using the brain.” This commitment to impartiality and transparency aligns seamlessly with GII’s own standards. The signing ceremony began with a warm welcome by Dr. Reddy, CEO, GII, setting the tone for what promises to be an impactful relationship between these two esteemed institutions. He explained the objectives behind this MoU. The event concluded on a note of gratitude from Mr. K. P. Das, Head Admin, GII—a fitting end to a day marked by optimism and collaboration. This agreement stands as a testament to what can be achieved when like-minded leaders come together in pursuit of excellence a future where Indian gemology reaches new heights through unity and innovation.
