The Maiko Star ( Sparkler ) sold at USD 15,700,000 on October 5th 2020

A 102.39 carats egg-shaped Diamond named as “The Sparkler “went under the hammer in a single-lot auction without a reserve price at Sotheby’s,  Hong Kong, on October 5th 2020 . It was purchased  for USD 15.7 million by a private collector from Japan for his second daughter and named it after her as   “The Maiko Star” . It is a “D” color, Flawless grade, type II A Oval shape diamond.  The rough diamond of 271 carat was discovered and mined  by De Beers Canada, was then cut and polished over a year by diamond specialists at Diacore to bring out its brilliance.

The live auction was held on October 5th2020 , and bidding started online as early as Sept. 15 2020 with a bidding amount as low as 1 HK Dollar. This unique auction  indicates and reflects the current consumer mood and market sentiments towards luxury products   in the current Covid-19 circumstances where travel is restricted.
